| The fruit Garcinia-Cambogia was once simply the less popular cousin of a trendy fruit, the mangosteen. Now, however, food supplements containing Garcinia cambogia extract have become the trend, touted because of their purported ability to quit weight gain and curb appetite.
The gambooge fresh fruit, also known as the Malabar tamarind, grows across south-west India, Burma and Indonesia. It ripens into a reddish or yellowish fruit about the size of an orange, but resembling the design of a pumpkin.
Individuals have long-used the dessicated gambooge rinds for chutneys or curries, and occasionally as a help for gut issues. But in the late sixties, scientists identified a material in the rind of the fresh fruit called hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, which has some potentially appealing qualities.
"Some various studies have proven that HCA quits an enzyme that turns sugar into fat," said Catherine Ulbricht, senior pharmacist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and cofounder of Natural Standard Research Collaboration, which reviews evidence on herbs and supplements.
A fruit extract that could interfere against the body's formation of fat? The allure is apparent. However, great results in culture tubes don't always translate to a whole individual.
Does Garcinia cambogia work?

"Further, nicely-designed clinical trials are required before any firm decisions can be created," Ulbricht stated.
If your pharmaceutical company needed to promote HCA as a drug, the company would have to find stronger evidence that the substance worked, via better-designed clinical trials. Without that info, HCA would not pass U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval, Ulbricht stated. However, the US Food And Drug Administration doesn't put substances sold as nutritional supplements under precisely the same burden of proof as pharmaceuticals. Despite the popularity of Gamboge tree, it's tough to track how powerful nutritional supplements containing it are.
"Groundwork of merchandises can vary greatly from producer to manufacturer, and from batch to batch within one manufacturing company," Ulbricht said. That makes it almost impossible to compare one brand to a different or even to quantify the results of an individual brand.
