| The fruit Garcinia cambogia was once just the less well-known cousin of a fashionable fruit, the mangosteen. However, now, dietary supplements containing Garcinia cambogia extract have become the trend, touted for their purported power to stop weight gain and control hunger.
The fruit, also called the Gamboge tree, grows across southwest India, Burma and Indonesia. It ripens into a reddish or yellowish fruit regarding the measurement of an orange, but resembling the outline of a pumpkin.
People have long used the dried gambooge rinds for chutneys or curries, and occasionally as a help for gut troubles. But in the late sixties, scientific researchers identified a material in the rind of the fruit called hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, which has some possibly appealing qualities.
"Some studies have proven that HCA ceases an enzyme that turns sugar into fat," said Catherine Ulbricht, senior pharmacist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and co founder of Natural Standard Research Collaboration, which reviews evidence on herbs and supplements.
A fruit infusion that may interfere against the body's formation of fat? The appeal is clear. Yet, great results in test tubes don't always translate to a complete individual.
Does Garcinia cambogia work?

Human studies had more inconsistent results. One fat loss test demonstrated no difference between people who took Brindleberry and those that took a placebo pill. Other trials linked HCA to weight-loss and healthful blood lipid levels (lipids are fats).
"Further, well-designed clinical trials are needed before any firm conclusions can be made," Ulbricht stated.
If a drugmaker needed to sell HCA as a drug, the firm would need to find stronger evidence the material functioned, coming from better-developed clinical trials. Without that information, HCA would not pass U.S. Food and Drug Administration acceptance, Ulbricht stated. But the FDA does not put chemicals sold as nutritional supplements under an identical burden of evidence as pharmaceuticals. In spite of the popularity of Goraka, it is not easy to monitor how powerful supplements including it are.
"Groundwork of goods can vary from maker to manufacturer, and from batch to batch within one maker," Ulbricht said. That makes it tough to examine one brand to another or even to quantify the results of a single brand.
